With 24 members and 63 deviations, we have achieved 2000 page views! Slowly and surely we are spreading our energies out into the art aethers. Our endeavor is gaining momentum, as we continue to commune with more members with a steady stream of fantastic submissions.
With our growing strength, we can consider initiating some new endeavors. We are a community and now that we have a solid base, we can set out to exert more influence and expand our connectedness to the wider art worlds. Some possible ideas:
-Revamp our attempts to get the DeviantArt administration to open a "visionary art" category.
-Have monthly themes to inspire more focused submissions (for example, have a theme of "Gaia" or "Evolution" or "Lowerworld")
-publish more articles more often
Please respond to this journal entry with any ideas you have for what we can do with our growing strength, and possible ways we can focus our energies toward more specific goals.
Remember, (I love this quote)
"Everything you can imagine is real." -Picasso

Our second Feature Article is now published: The Synergy of Art and Science
Our visionary conversation continues with turance's :iconturance: invitation to seek inspiration and direction in the integration of the known and the numinous, of science and art. I am particularly appreciative of turance’s call for artists to find vision in scientific descriptions of nature. Indeed, there is an extraordinary awakening contained in the realization that the universe “out there” is more incredible, more beautiful, more intricate and sublime, than anything we might simply conjure in our own heads. The humility contained in this thought is an explosive engine of discovery. Rather than stewing in the surrealistic stream of a consciousness bound by the cage of one’s own experience, the visionary travels beyond the beyond, seeking to integrate mysterious states of grace with revealed patterns in nature.

In turance's eloquent words, “Science is not necessarily God, but its lessons are divine. Artists can direct their efforts to creating an art, a mythology, that is informed by cosmology and yet is captivating to people of all different worldviews and capacities for understanding.”

***Members*** Let's get some more articles out into the deviant aether & spread our voice - see the News & Events section.

Are you Visionary?
Visionary art is created by those with the electrifying compulsion to channel wisdom and light into our shadowed reality. The Visionary artist is humble and receptive to a kosmic life force, and undertakes the discipline necessary to bring it into manifestation. He sees beyond normal reality with clarity: not just symbols, but the meanings behind them. Through a process of self-discovery and transformation, the Visionary artist awakens to the mysteries of reality, and compassionately desires to shock others into these same realizations.

The Goal
Visionary artists undertake the joyous responsibility of shaping the future of our world. Here on deviantART, we participate in a global community of artists where we channel so much energy with our work. While we may work in solitude, we can dedicate our efforts to our families, coworkers, friends, enemies, and fellow humans everywhere on the planet. We are here to help shape the mythologies and worldviews of our collective future, and are devoted to offering captivating Visions of not only what the world is, but what it can become.

Joining Our Community
If you consider yourself to be a Visionary artist, or strive to become one, then join our community. We are here to share our Visions with one another, and devote some energy into offering thoughtful and reflective insights into each other's work. This is not for the mere two-eyed; open your eyes of the flesh, of the mind, and of Spirit - to the full spectrum of our dynamic human perception - and bring your Visions into the world with us.

Technical Details of Joining and Submissions

-Send us a note telling us a little bit about your work and why it is Visionary.
-Entitle the note "submission" to submit, or "join" if you want to join.
-non-members can have no more than 2 posts on the site. Members can have up to 5 (for now.)
-Include a link to the deviation(s) you would like to submit.
-Tell us what category it is in.
-Include a description of 150-words-or-more about your specific piece that we can post in the "artist's comments" box. This could describe your experience of creating it and help the viewer to engage it. (If you cannot write in English or are unsure of how to discuss your work, just let us know, and we'll see what we can do.)
We'll take a look at your work and hopefully accept you into our community. We look forward to seeing it!

Writing About Your Work

It is often quite challenging for us to throw words onto our own work that will stick and do it justice. Nevertheless, in our community we value the thoughts of the artist about his/her work, and insist that you discuss it. An important attribute of visionary art is that it is inspired by a specific experience, message, idea, or transmission. Your words can help the viewer to engage your work and open worlds of meaning to it that may never have been seen otherwise. Just as the history behind Picasso's "Guernica" open it up to vast realms of meaning, your subjective history behind your work can also help the viewer to engage it.

Here are some suggestions for discussing your work:
-what inspired it?
-what does it mean to you?
-where do the symbols come from?
-what does it make you feel or think?

If you cannot write in the English language or refuse to write about your work, let us know and we will see what we can do.

***HELP BUILD OUR COMMUNITY: WRITE AN ARTICLE***

We want to spread the word, educate, and reveal our insights as artists and writers about visionary art. YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE by writing an article:

The article should be a well-written, 1-6 page piece about any aspect of visionary art. It could be about your own unique view of it, your experience of making it, a discussion of your favorite artists, an inquiry into a particular visionary dimension, or whatever. This could serve to help others develop an understanding of visionary art, stimulate discussion, or explore the creative process. It should be well-written, and we can help you to revise or tweak it if necessary. Questions are welcome. This is a unique opportunity for you to contribute your thoughts of art and creativity to the community. Please take advantage of this, and send a note!

A Small Critique of Modern Visionary Art
by mathismondhut :iconmathismondhut:
published April 5, 2008
A visionary artist himself, our member mathismondhut offers a piercing, patient criticism of visionary art. Powers and dangers are unearthed in this brief, yet poignant analysis of our art form. His ideas touch upon the core of the relationship between visionary art and culture.
A brief excerpt:
"The idea of changing the mortal world with an immortal, transcendental art, or an art that claims to be transcendental, should be observed with a very skeptical eye, as the wish for change always stems from the mortal self. As the mortal self wants to heal a mortal world, and says at the same time, 'I represent the immortal' - well, think about it."
